Journal Access
The University has many journals available in the UL and the Moore Library. But journal access usually means remote journal access.
The University's electronic subscriptions usually work seamlessly if one is using a computer directly connected to the CUDN, but not otherwise. There are many routes available for off-campus access.
Whether the off-campus routes work can depend on the precise status of one's Raven account. For `staff' (which includes College Fellows) and students they should, for people who have left (Raven for Life) they should not, and visitors are a grey area. The UL has a Raven test page which will show the status of your Raven account for accessing journals remotely.
Magic
Cut and paste the URL, or DOI, of the restricted site into the box below. On clicking "fetch" an attempt will be made to open an unrestricted version of the resource in a new tab.
(Feel free to report bugs to mjr19.)
Search (1)
Search the publisher's site for references to access via Shibboleth, and then for "University of Cambridge" under the "UK Federation". Some publishers (e.g. the IoP) make this easy, and may even remember your settings next time you visit. Others make it much harder (e.g the APS).
Search (2)
Search for a link to the journal directly from the UL's webpage. Remember to click on "Journals", not the default "Articles".
This method is probably the most reliable, in that it should always find a route is one exists. However, it is not the most convenient method.
Plugins
Use the UL's recommended browser plugin. Not all browsers are supported, and the permissions the plugin requires are slightly frightening.
Use a VPN
Use the UIS's VPN service. VPNs can be helpful when configured so that, e.g., all traffic to cam.ac.uk goes via the VPN, and traffic to the rest of the world goes directly. However, here we need traffic to various publishers scattered throughout the world to go via the VPN, so the obvious configuration is to send all traffic to go via the VPN. This is not ideal if one is in the UK, and if one is far from the UK routing all traffic via Cambridge is far from optimal. It would certainly be better if the VPN were turned off before any form of video were streamed.
