Screen Grabbers

Grabbing the contents of a window as a bitmap for reproduction in a talk or webpage is a reasonable thing to do. If you are lucky the result might have sufficient resolution for a paper or thesis.

Various programs installed can do this, with varyign features. Old, simple, programs will give black rectangles for windows which are drawn in by GL rather than X applications: beware!

• gimp, File, Create, Screenshot.
• xfce4-screenshooter
• gnome-screenshot -i
• spectacle
• xv, right mouse button, grab.
• xwd (for masochists)

To create compact EPS from the resulting bitmap, should one wish to do so, I'd recommend bmp2eps. That will also create pdf output if desired. For most screenshots, it is advisable to avoid saving in JPEG format to avoid sharp edges being blurred.
